A Prayer for the First Sunday in Advent

By Administrator | December 2, 2007

Good and loving God we are gathered here today on this First Sunday of Advent where we remember the promise of peace. This is a season where much Love and happiness, Hope and Joy can be –and is– experienced as we turn our focus on the peace that you long for us to have. We gather here before you in awe of that promise and of the presence of Christ.

We are grateful for the love and happiness and joy that comes to many of us during this blessed season. But we are also mindful, dear God, that for many the holidays bring a cloud of sorrow, even despair. For some it truly is a blue Christmas season not because of you, but due to dark memories of loss, or harm or even their loneliness or want of necessities or care.

For those of us who revel in the seasonal awakening of Peace and Hope and Joy and Love, teach us how we might be a “voice of one crying out in the wilderness to prepare the way of the Lord” for those who cannot find you in the darkness of their troubles during the holidays. Let the love we feel at Christmas guide us to bring Peace and Hope and Joy and Love to those who, for whatever reason, cannot find their way in the wilderness. Guide us God to understand that the promise that is Christ, the promise of your Reign, cannot be fully met until all are enfolded in your loving arms enveloped in your peace, now and for always. This is a blessed season for many, help us to make it one for all of us here today, help us to make it one for all of our community, and for all of creation. The promise of Christmas is peace, show us how we can be your arms and your feet and ears and to speak your words. Let us be instruments bringing this incredible promise of peace to the world.

AMEN
