“Live Like A Child”

October 15, 2017
Mark 10:14 & Matthew 18:1-5
Sermon by Angie Wright

Opening Prayer:

Dear Lord, let me speak God’s truth and feel the love of Jesus so it can be poured among Your people. Lord, please be with us today and let me speak only Your truth the way it was intended. There is no greater gift than sharing Your love with others. Please, I ask of you to let our hearts and minds be open and be willing to hear Your testament through me. In Jesus’s name I pray, Amen.

You know there are sometimes you just repeat words you have spoken over and over. The truth of the matter is that I do this because I cannot explain in words what joy it truly brings me to be up here speaking. I will say this over and over again, I am truly honored and blessed that my fellow church family believes in me enough that I get to share my journey and interpretation of what I have learned thus far. I asked you last time if you thought it was coincidence that certain things happen; for me, I feel everything happens for a reason. I also have found that it might take years for you to truly grasp the meaning of why it happened in the first place. This journey I am sharing with you today was inspired by my son Aiden. Yes, I told him this many times and now that the day has come to share, I know for a fact that he is embarrassed now because I am pointing him out to all of you. I say to you Aiden, hold your head high, because you are a very bright star with such wisdom inside of you. My beautiful son, my gift from God and my teacher; how blessed am I.

We have all overcome many storms in our lives and I am pretty certain that some of those storms are why you are here today. For some, the storms make people drift away and for others, they make people come together in unity. Today I want you to think for a second, ask yourself and be truthful, what made you start doubting? (PAUSE) Now, what made you feel the love and warmth of God to continue to believe and take the time to learn about Him?

The verses I picked for today are very powerful. What was Jesus saying when He said that we must be like a child in order to be welcomed into the Kingdom? I thought as long as we did good deeds and give money to people less fortunate and smile at people even when we didn’t want to was all we needed to do? What is this acting like children have anything to do with being accepted into Heaven? Wait a second, I don’t even know how to act like a child, what am I to do? Am I supposed to grab curly Sue’s hair? Pick my nose? Run around and not have any responsibilities? What does this mean? I have been told I need to act like an adult all my life. I do not know how to act like a child, but when you tell me to act like an adult, I am a superstar!

Matthew 18 verses 4-5 state, “Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. “whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me”.” This is so POWERFUL.

Everything happens for a reason, remember me saying that? I lost my father a few months back. I have been in this storm since May when I found out he had 4-6 weeks to live. My life was changing again and I did not understand why I was losing everyone that I loved. Not even a year and a half has past and now both my parents are gone. I finally understood why my mom said she felt like an orphan when her parents past away. Losing my parents has been the toughest storms I have gone through so far.
September 19, 2017 I received a phone call from Aiden’s school. Before I answered the phone I knew something was wrong. On the end of the line was one of the ladies from his aftercare program telling me Aiden was injured and possibly broke his arm. They didn’t know anything else but was going to call me back as soon as the ambulance got there. Well, as most of you know, he broke his arm.
What you all do not know about me is that I do not remember much about my childhood. Bits and pieces show up every now and then. Aiden will attest to this, I tell him constantly he has to teach me to be a kid because I do not know how. He does encourage me and tells me I am getting better.

The events that took place the very next day was an eye opening experience for me and I saw a new door open. That evening, when I was able to sit and reflect about the last 24 hours, I ended up seeing a whole new perspective on life once again.

Aiden was in the hospital and it was my birthday. He was in pain, tired, and just plain old miserable for many reasons. Trust me he will tell you the story if you ask. With everything that he was going through: the pain, no sleep, IV not staying in, and everything else he had to endure, he was more worried about me. Why? Because it was my birthday and he wanted to make me feel special. There were many gifts my son gave me that day and I knew they were all a gift from above. They were eye-opening experiences. What does it mean to live like a child? We all have storms (baggage) every day. We were all born with the same gift, to love unconditionally. You learn hate; it does not come from your Creator. We are all God’s people and for some reason we have been taught that color, religion, money and power are more important than the art of true unconditional love. We are all born with it, it is in our children, and we adults take that spirit away. Why? Why is it so hard for adults to live in the eyes of children? People, I ask you how amazing would it be to love everything on this Earth; to give without wanting something in return, to know no difference in color, race, religion or class. Why do we have to live by labels in our society? Are we all not created by God, which would mean we are all equal! We were put here to help one another create a beautiful life and live in unity on this amazing place God created for us. Learning how to live amongst one another and uplifting everyone to fulfill their spiritual journey.

I love giving challenges, but they are always to open your eyes to a bigger picture and a different perspective. I challenge you to take some time out of your week and talk to some children. Ask them questions about their likes and dislikes. Let them tell you stories. Take a moment to think of a fond time in your life as a child. Think about how it felt. Think about something that made you feel special. Make those memories stick in your head daily and make more memories like that. Having the ability to love with no boundaries or conditions is one of the most amazing feelings I have felt in my life. Stop second guessing your heart and put all your faith in the Lord. He provides daily for you. Start living with only love in your heart and continue to spread it. I said it before, it is contagious.
Love is the one thing we all possess in life, but we have to be willing to use it the way it was intended.
Hear these words once more. Matthew Chapter 18, verses 1-5 states, “At that time the disciples came to Jesus saying, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Then Jesus called to a little child to Him, set him in the midst of them, and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. “Whoever receives one little child like this in My name receives Me”.

Closing Prayer:

Our Father put Jesus here hoping to change hate into love by giving the ultimate sacrifice, His Son. Such pain and torture was brought to Jesus and yet His love for everyone made people have hope and people started changing because they believed in Jesus’s message. Love without an end in sight and watch your life turn into a beautiful bliss of pure happiness and joy that will be unexplainable in words.
